History of HOZUBAG
The Birth of HOZUBAG
Kameoka City, Kyoto Prefecture, announced the "Kameoka Plastic Waste Zero Declaration" in 2018 and is taking various measures to eliminate disposable plastic waste by 2030.
The city requested that we "hold an event to raise awareness about eco-bags using paragliding fabric," and we made a proposal to Kameoka City regarding the event.
They didn't want this to be a "one-off event" to raise awareness about eco-bags.
If I was going to do it, I wanted it to be something that would actually bring about change in society, even if it was small.
So we thought, why not set up a base in Kameoka to make eco-bags out of collected paragliders and use it as a kickoff event for ongoing activities?
We proposed an event with the aim of commercializing it, and Kameoka City responded to our surprise, saying, "Okay, let's create a base here."
That was the moment when "HOZUBAG" was born.

Kickoff Installation
A large bag is made by patchworking used paragliders.
We did an installation in front of Kameoka Station, suspended from a crane.

Workshop in Kameoka
The big bags used in the installation were spread out in the venue, and each person cut out their favorite part,
A workshop was held where participants could sew the fabric into eco-bags to take home, and around 200 people took part.

Establishment of HOZUBAG Mfg.
Turning a paraglider into a bag involves a variety of difficult tasks and problems that cannot be handled by existing sewing factories, such as dismantling the complex structure of the aircraft, cleaning it, and cutting the non-flat material.
This means that if we have a base that can handle this work, we can create a resource circulation system that has never existed before.
He renovated an old Japanese house in Kameoka City and established "HOZUBAG.Mfg."
For the first time, there is a place for used paragliders owned by paragliding schools and individual users across the country.

An unexpected start to sales
In November 2019, HOZUBAG was in Paris.
Sales had not yet begun in Japan, but with the desire to "work internationally without being bound by domestic or international boundaries,"
I took a lot of samples and had an exhibition at a gallery in the Palais Royal in Paris.
So, I asked a French-based art dealer, art collector, and publisher,
As a leading gallerist in the Paris art scene, the gallery has been planning high-quality exhibitions for the past several decades.
Yvon Lambert Bookshop is a Paris-based bookshop run by Yvon Lambert that focuses on contemporary art.
They caught the eye of the owner and ended up selling all the bags I had brought with me.
And so, unexpectedly, HOZUBAG's debut was decided.

HOZUBAG made from balloons
With no experience in operating a factory, they were literally feeling their way through an unprecedented business like a paraglider dismantling center.
In 2021, the souvenir shop "sagair" opened in conjunction with the renovation of the Kyushu Saga International Airport terminal building, and requested that we create a HOZUBAG made from hot air balloon skins to coincide with its reopening.
Saga Prefecture is the host city of the Saga International Balloon Fiesta, Asia's largest international hot air balloon event, attracting visitors from all over the world.
Over 100 balloons come together to light up the late autumn sky over Saga.
We received the hot air balloon that was actually used in the competition and produced and sold HOZUBAGs exclusive to Sagair.

Expanding HOZUBAG
In 2022, the product will be available at the MoMA Design Store, the official museum shop of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
The product has passed the inspection at MoMA in the United States and is on sale at three flagship stores in Japan.
In 2023, NOT A HOTEL AOSHIMA, which operates a lifestyle service that allows people to "create a new lifestyle" with just a smartphone, will have amenities such as "Make the world more fun and free."
The HOZUBAG Tote XL was adopted.

Exhibited at "Fashion in Japan 1945-2020 - Trends and Society" (The National Art Center, Tokyo)
In 2021, we will participate in a large-scale exhibition that unravels the history of Japanese fashion over a long span from the post-war period to the future.
The works were exhibited in the "Fashion for the Future" section.
The collection of dismantled paragliders hanging from the 8.5-meter ceiling was the most impressive sight in the vast museum.

Exhibition at SONY PARK mini
Located just below the Sukiyabashi intersection in Ginza, Tokyo, on the basement floor of the Nishi Ginza Parking Lot adjacent to the Ginza Sony Park currently under construction.
Sony Park Mini, which houses a coffee stand and gallery, is a small establishment located in a space of just 10 tsubo (approximately 30.0 m2).
As a new experimental pop-up space that creates space and experiences in the city, it will continue to launch programs that allow people to feel the pulse of artists.
With this concept in mind, we are creating a space where you can encounter new programs every time you visit.
In the fall of 2022, I held my first solo exhibition in Japan in this small gallery, and many people enjoyed the neatly lined up HOZUBAGs with a coffee in hand.
